Biology literally means the study of life and if that’s not important, what is? Biology A-level will give you the skills to make connections and associations with all living things around you. Being such a broad topic, you’re bound to find a specific area of interest, plus it opens the door to a fantastic range of interesting careers. What will you study? AS 1. Biological molecules 2. Cells 3. Organisms exchange substances with their environment 4. Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms A2 5. Energy transfers in and between organisms 6. Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments 7. Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems 8. The control of gene expression Biology is a practical subject and practical work is at the heart of this course. Throughout your studies you will carry out a variety of practical activities (including 12 required practicals).

What you need to get on

6 GCSE/BTEC passes at Level 4 or above. If you would like to study Biology at A-Level it is desirable for you to achieve a Level 6 or above in Biology at GCSE. In addition, you would also need a Level 5 in Maths.

How you are assessed

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
