Biology is the study of living organisms; from the structure and function of their cells to how different species have evolved and the different relationships between them. A Level Biology takes the knowledge learnt at GCSE and develops a more satisfying depth of understanding that prepares students for the study of any biology related degree course at university. Life demonstrates great variation, and therefore the challenge of biology is to apply this understanding, making links between different ideas and being analytical in order to explain our observations of the living world around us. Course The Year 12 course involves the laying down of foundations for the successful further study of biology. You will learn about a variety of biological molecules, such as proteins, lipids and sugars, and the structure of cells and their components. The course continues by looking at the different ways in which organisms exchange materials with their environment and how genetic information determines characteristics and is passed on to new cells. In Year 13 the biochemistry and cell structure of Year 12 is applied to understand photosynthesis and respiration, as well as how organisms respond to their environment and regulate the expression of their genes. The study of biology is also taken to a larger scale by learning about populations and ecosystems, and of course, Darwin's theory of Natural Selection. Our minimum entry requirements for September 2026 are six GCSEs at grade 6 or above, including English Language and Mathematics. Applicants must achieve Grade 7 or above in each of the subjects (or related subjects) that they wish to study at A Level.
