What the college says

The French A level course incorporates both the linguistic aspects of learning French, as well as gaining a deeper understanding of the culture, politics and life in francophone countries. Current and relevant issues are explored and candidates will also gain an historical perspective on the French-speaking world. The themes we study are below (the first two are tested in the AS): Changes in French society Political and artistic culture in francophone countries Immigration and multicultural society of France The occupation of France, and the resistance movement (1940s France) A film and a work of literature will also be studied and written about in examination and students can specialise in an area of culture, a literary text or film in readiness for their speaking test. In addition, a rigorous study of grammar is essential at A level so as to ensure the depth and breadth of knowledge required. Students are taught grammar formally and given opportunities to practise grammatical concepts so as to be able to write and speak at a high level. Translating, both from and into French is tested so skills for this will form a significant part of the course.
