What the college says
Film is a powerful storytelling medium - it entertains, challenges, provokes and inspires and shapes how we see the world. A Level Film Studies at South Devon College invites you to explore the art of cinema, deepening your understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of film in all its forms. Over the two-year course, you’ll study films from a wide range of cultures, genres and time periods. You’ll consider how films are made, how they create meaning, and how audiences respond to them. From Hollywood classics to independent British cinema, global film and experimental shorts, you’ll explore film as both an art form and a cultural product. You’ll develop key analytical skills as you examine cinematography, editing, sound, performance and narrative structure. You’ll also learn how film reflects issues of identity, society and politics, and how context influences both production and reception. Alongside this, you’ll have the chance to express your own ideas through creative work, whether in screenwriting, video production or written critique. This course is ideal for anyone who loves film and wants to understand it on a deeper level. It helps you build a wide range of transferable skills including visual literacy, research, critical thinking and creative expression - skills that are highly valued in careers like filmmaking, media, journalism, marketing, communications and the arts.
