Paper 1: Film History (35%) Exam: 2 hours There are two parts to this paper: US Film History: an exploration of the changes in the US film industry from silent film to 1990 European Film Movements: an exploration of significant film movements such as German expressionism and surrealism Paper 2: Critical Approaches to Film (35%) Exam: 2 hours In this section of the course you will look at: UK vs. US film: a comparison of the film industries in different countries Documentary: an analysis of the distinctive nature of documentary film and its associated filming and editing techniques Ideology: a comparison of three films sharing a central theme with focus on the ideological implications of filmmaking Paper 3: NEA Making and Evaluating a Short Film (30%) Coursework: 60 hours In this unit you will make your own 5 minute short film. You will need to provide an evidence trail explaining your research and planning and will write an evaluation after the film is complete. The department will provide a varied stock of texts, recordings and films and students will be given access to recording equipment, camcorders, DSLRs, lighting, microphones and other relevant equipment. Students are expected to make a one-off payment of £25 at the beginning of the year to fund blank media, filming licenses, props etc. as required by the course.
