What the college says
A Level Course Content and Assessment Criteria You will explore a wide range of literary fiction texts, covering the main forms of prose, poetry and drama. In total, eight whole texts will be covered as well as preparation for unseen poetry. Throughout the course, you will be required to write coherently and analytically, using correct literary terminology, to make connections between texts and their contexts, and to explore how language form and structure shape meaning. You will also explore how other readers have interpreted texts critically. How will you be assessed? The A Level consists of three externally examined papers and one coursework component. The first examination paper requires you to study one Shakespeare play and one other comedic or tragic drama, as well as an anthology of critical works. (30%) The second examination paper requires you to study two prose texts linked to the theme, of “Science and Society”. (20%) The third examination requires you to respond to unseen poetry and to a pre-prepared poetry collection of a named poet or poetic period, for example The Romantic period. (30%) The coursework component allows you a great deal of personal choice in order to pursue your own literary interests. You may choose two whole texts from any form which are linked by theme, and must not have been studied elsewhere on the course. You will write one 3,000 word comparative essay on their texts and the relevant critical works. (20%) Exam Board: Edexcel
