A-Level Literature covers a range of literary genres, such as drama (either tragedy or comedy, selected by the teacher), prose (post-2000 and pre-1900) and poetry. Students analyse the ways in which writers create meaning and the ways in which works of fiction can support, and sometimes change our understanding of the world around us. Students are encouraged to explore texts in a number of different ways: the study of literature within a specific genre; the study of various texts, chosen from a set text list provided by the teacher. Students develop the skill of writing about texts in a number of different ways. Examples of texts studied include: Othello by William Shakespeare; The Death of A Salesman by Arthur Miller; The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald; selected poetry by John Keats and William Blake; The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Attwood and The Kite Runner by Hosseini. Not only is there a considerable amount of reading content in the course, there is also an expectation that students will read widely beyond the set texts to support their broader knowledge of literature and literary traditions. In Y13, the course offers the opportunity to specialise with your choice of texts for the coursework, which makes up 20% of the course. It is therefore essential that students opting to study this course are committed readers in their personal time. For students who enjoy reading and debate, this is a hugely rewarding A-Level.
