Students who love to read and explore English Literature will enjoy the depth of study at A Level. Students will study a similar combination of the forms of literature studied at GCSE level and will cover prose, drama, and poetry, as well as a range of non-fiction secondary resources in support of their independent study. Students who enjoy shared reading and undertaking personal investigation will thrive! Students discover how central narrative is to the way literary texts work and they are introduced to the different aspects of genre. Wide and independent reading is encouraged as the course also considers different types of critical approach and how texts can reflect cultural meanings. Texts: 'Othello', 'The Great Gatsby', 'AQA Love Through the Ages Poetry Anthology', 'Journey's End', 'Wilfred Owen Collected Works', and 'First Casualty'. By studying English Literature, students are able to go on to study just about anything. Although many English students choose to stay in education, either as a teacher or researcher, most find employment in fields such as publishing, journalism, writing, private business, entertainment and communication. People who study English are well prepared to continue their education in English, business or law graduate programmes. That being said, there are opportunities to take degrees in most Arts, Social Sciences or Humanities areas at university.
