If you are interested in people and in language, you will enjoy studying English Literature. It will teach you about the past, enable you to gain new perspectives on the world today, and you will engage with others in challenging literary debate. The Course We follow the AQA, A Level Specification A. The examination includes two examination papers which account for 80% of A Level marks. The texts we study are 'The Great Gatsby', 'The Color Purple', 'Wuthering Heights', Shakespeare's 'Othello' and the twentieth century drama 'Top Girls', 'Feminine Gospels' by Carol Ann Duffy, and a post-1900 poetry anthology. There is also a non-exam assessment in the second year which will require students to critically compare two texts, 'The Importance of Being Earnest' and a post-1900 text of the student's own choosing. Students will have to produce an extended essay of 2500 words; this will account for 20% of A Level marks. We also follow the AS Level course in the first year. We run a number of English groups per year, each group having nine lessons over the fortnight, taught by two teachers. Various teaching methods are used to accommodate a range of learning styles, from supported self study through individual tutorial guidance to whole class or small group discussion. Our minimum entry requirements for September 2026 are six GCSEs at grade 6 or above, including English Language and Mathematics. Applicants must achieve Grade 7 or above in each of the subjects (or related subjects) that they wish to study at A Level.
