What the college says
English Literature at A Level is an historically popular yet challenging subject throughout schools and at Plantsbrook, this is no different. The new specification created by AQA involves the themes of 'Love through the Ages' as well as 'World War One and its Aftermath' and the demands of the course are both exciting and thought-provoking. In Year 12 you will study texts such as 'Othello', 'The Great Gatsby', pre-1900 love poetry and unseen love poetry from the medieval period to the modern day therefore a love of reading is paramount to not only enjoying this subject but also to achieving. All of these texts will feature in the final exams at the end of Year 13. At the end of Year 12, pupils will read Frankenstein, the chosen set text for the non examined assessment (NEA), and pupils are given a recommended reading list. Pupils will choose one of these texts to compare to Frankenstein for their NEA. In Year 13, pupils will complete their NEA, as well as begin their study of World War One texts such as 'A Long, Long Way', 'Journey's End' and 'Up the Line to Death' poetry anthology, as well as exploring unseen war prose extracts. The examinations in Year 13 will include both the Year 12 and the Year 13 texts.
