Economics is a versatile subject and gives you a sophisticated understanding of our country and how the economy works. Economics is split into two areas of study: microeconomics, where you will learn about different markets and how price is determined by the interaction of supply and demand; and macroeconomics that considers the objectives for a stable and healthy economy including high employment, low in action and policies that the government use to influence them. You could work for a big corporation as an economic analyst, or be the next Evan Davies or Stephanie Flanders on the BBC. Banks need economists, as do local and national government, and economics is always valuable in careers like marketing, law, journalism or teaching. Economics has become high profile. The credit crunch, bankers’ bonuses and fears of a Euro meltdown are just three topics rarely out of the news in recent years, throwing a light on the importance of and divisions within the discipline. You will apply economic theory to support analysis of current economic problems and issues, and you will be able to appreciate the interrelationships between microeconomics and macroeconomics.

What you need to get on

5 GCSE grades A*- C/4+ including English language. Maths grade 6.

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
