D & T PRODUCT DESIGN (3-D DESIGN) is a varied course encompassing all areas of graphics, electronics & materials. During the course you will learn about materials and components by studying and testing them. You will experience different manufacturing processes, product development & manufacture and different production systems. New technologies will be studied, including work on CAD/CAM. Students need to be motivated and perceptive. You will be learning through hands-on making, lessons with multi-media, researching topics, and giving presentations to others. ICT skills (including use of camera, computer, CAM equipment, e.g. CNC Routers, Laser Cutter, 3D Printer, Vinyl cutter) will also be developed along with drawing and graphical presentation techniques. The course is a very practical one and it is highly valued by Universities. Arkwright Scholarships are available to students to have a career interest in Design, Engineering or Architecture in the widest sense. Scholarships are worth �600 over two years and students gain a valuable advantage when it comes to interviews for jobs/universities. Competitions are available to enter - just have a look at 'Competition Corner' in the Tech Block to see the successes so far! Students have become involved with the Engineering Education Scheme, visits to Heinz, Croppers, Technical Fibres and Andertons (heavy metal laser cutting).
