What the college says
Core Maths - A Level 3 qualification in Mathematical Studies. It is aimed at everyone who has already achieved an A, B or C grade in GCSE maths. The qualification is a two year course and will be assessed by examination at the end of the course. It is equivalent to an AS course (60 UCAS points for an A). We are a lead successfully school in piloting this qualification, we have two Y12 groups and two in Y13. The ethos of the course is problem solving using mathematical skills in real life situations. About 80% of the course uses GCSE Higher tier (level 2) skills, the rest will be Level 3 maths. If you have studied at Foundation tier (many of our current students did), or had a gap since GCSE maths, or just forgotten it, don’t worry, we will cover all the content during the course. Algebra and pure maths very much take a back seat, instead we will look at applying statistics, graphs, estimating, spreadsheets, percentages, data analysis, critical thinking, decision flow, finance and communication skills to solve problems in context. The course is designed to complement your other studies, especially courses such as any Science, Psychology, Economics, Business studies, and Geography, and will be an major advantage both when progressing to University, and when studying there. However, the main reason to study core maths is to learn to be an independent self-motivated problem solver who can tackle any issue in their life with a systematic ‘can do’ effective attitude.
