BTEC Dance is a fantastic choice if you are interested in studying dance in depth through the creation and performance of choreography, and the analysis of dance repertoire. You do not have to pursue a career in dance to take this course, and the skill-set gained from taking the role of both a choreographer and performer in a practical setting provide a range of favourable skills for both employment and university. This course is assessed predominantly through internally assessed coursework, and assessment has a larger focus on practical work and covers a wider range of dance styles compared to the A Level. The BTEC course can be studied in three sizes; BTEC Extended Certificate in Dance: equivalent to 1 A Level, and studied alongside 2 other subjects BTEC Diploma in Dance: equivalent to 2 A Levels, and studied alongside 1 other subject BTEC Extended Diploma in Performing Arts: full time course which is equivalent to 3 A Levels, and covers Dance, Acting and Singing You do not need to have studied BTEC or GCSE Dance before, but having prior practical experience is essential. Practical assessments will be in a wide variety of styles, but as long as you’re enthusiastic and willing to learn, it doesn’t matter if you haven’t studied a specific style before. Students are required to already have competent technique in dance on admission, and you should attend Wyke start practical audition workshops in order to be accepted on the course.
