Biologists have acquired huge amounts of information about living organisms and this has been very noticeable in recent years with the increasing discoveries being made by molecular biologists and geneticists. In the IB diploma course it is hoped that students will acquire a limited body of facts and at the same time develop a broad, general understanding of the principles of the subject. Structure and function. Students should appreciate the structures permit some functions while at the same time limiting others. Universality versus diversity. Some molecules e.g. DNA, amino acids are ubiquitous and so are processes and structures. However these universal features exist in a biological world of enormous diversity. Equilibrium within systems. Checks and balances exist both within living organisms and within ecosystems. The state of dymamic equilibrium is essential for the continuity of life. Evolution. The concept of evolution draws together the other themes. It can be regarded as change leading to diversity within constraints, and this leads to adaptations of structure and function.

What you need to get on

For the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB), a student should be a general all-round student,with an overallB-grade profile or higher at GCSE or level 2 equivalentand have a B grade or more in the subject s/he wishes to take at IB diploma higher level or as IB single-subject certificate.

How you are assessed
