What the college says

Biology involves the study of living organisms: the way they work, their interactions with each other and the environment. The diversity of life and its study extends from the simplest bacteria to complex multi-cellular organisms like mammals. The course builds on material covered at GCSE including cell biology, enzymes, genetic variation, inheritance and ecology, while also introducing new concepts such as the physiology of organ systems, biochemistry of respiration and photosynthesis, molecular biology and the control of gene expression. Theory is closely linked to practical application and this is reflected in the course delivery. Students will be required to apply their practical knowledge to critically analyse and interpret experimental data and design. To facilitate this there will be fieldwork opportunities. Students will develop the following skills: the ability to communicate scientific understanding succinctly and effectively both orally and written; the use of higher-level problem solving skills, data handling and interpretation; analytical, practical and observational skills, as well as independent learning and research.
