A level year 1 is studied in year 12. Topics studied include the cardiovascular, pulmonary, digestive and immune systems as well as the structure of cells and how substances are able to move in and out of them, the cell cycle and cellular organisation, exchange and transport in plants and animals and biodiversity. In year 13, students complete the course with A Level year 2. Students look at factors affecting populations, which involves some ecology work, energy and ecosystems, nutrient cycles and succession. They also study the biochemistry of photosynthesis and respiration, patterns of inheritance, the nervous, endocrine and excretory system, muscle contraction, homeostasis, genetic control of proteins and gene expression and DNA technology.

6th Form entry: The overall 6th Form entry requirements are: a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades 9-4, including a grade 9-4 in English. Subject specific entry: GCSE Grade 6,6 in Combined Science OR Grade 6 in Biology AND Chemistry (triple), Grade 5 in Maths and English
