It is a fascinating subject for general knowledge, often in the news due to its impact on society. Biology raises many issues of interest in religion & ethics, such as what it is to be human, whether and how we might be altering ourselves as a species, and what to do about moral decisions around the start and end of life in the light of scientific facts. Biology demands and therefore develops your literacy, numeracy and graphical skills. If you can do Biology you can tackle most types of University degree! What will I learn about?  Investigative and practical skills.  Structure of key biological molecules including DNA, proteins and carbohydrates  The structure of cells and how cell ultrastructure is related to function  How organisms respond to changes in their external environment and internal environment  The biology of disease  Why all organisms are different and the methods and patterns of inheritance including the evolution and origin of species  The Biochemistry of respiration and of photosynthesis, how energy and material flows through ecosystems

What you need to get on

Minimum 6 GCSEs at A* - B or 9 - 7 including English Language, English Literature and Mathematics. Minimum grade 7 GCSE Biology.

How you are assessed

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
