This course is for students who want to continue studying mathematics after GCSE. You'll already be familiar with some of the topics but the A level will give you the chance to study these and some new ones in much greater depth. Maths is a facilitating subject which means it will prepare you for a wide range of degree subjects. It can be a recommended or a necessary requirement for many mathematical, technical and scientific subjects at university. It's a good combination with most other subjects you can study at A level and will give you transferable skills including logical reasoning, problem solving and analytical thinking skills that can lead to many different careers.

What you need to get on

Grade 7 Maths GCSE (grade 6 will be considered and may be required to attend extra tuition). You are expected to be competent in the following GCSE skills: Algebraic manipulation; Factorisation of quadratic expressions; Solving quadratic equations, including use of Completing the Square and the Difference of Two Squares; Manipulation of Surds, including the expansion of pairs of brackets and the rationalisation of fractions with surds in the denominator; Manipulations of indices.

How you are assessed

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
