What the college says

The course starts with a study of the major stores of water and carbon and the cycles connecting them as these are major elements in the natural environment and understanding them is fundamental to many aspects of physical geography. We then look at Coastal environments in more detail including a local case study, probably conducted on a field trip, together with further case studies from across the globe. Tectonic and storm hazards are an increasingly frequent occurrence and we will look at the physical nature of them, their impacts and the ways the risks can be managed. On the human side we focus on globalisation: the trends in patterns of global trade; the influence of transnational corporations and the impact of new technologies. We look at the impacts on workers across the global in countries at different stages of development. We consider how international organisations try and tackle and mitigate the problems associated with globalisation and look at Antarctica as an example of how Nations are working together. The concept of place is central to geography and this now gets a section of its own. Which will allow us to do an in depth study of places from the local to the global using a variety of fieldwork and other data gathering and presentation techniques. The use of the earth’s resources is an important global issue and we will finish off with looking at the relationship between people, the environment and resources You are required to undertake 4 days of fieldwork d
