A Level Further Mathematics
at Cardinal Newman College, Preston · college
What the college says
If Maths is one of your favourite subjects and you achieve a grade A in your GCSE, you should seriously consider studying Further Maths at A Level. As Maths is such a vast subject it is impossible to cover it all in one A Level, which is why Further Maths develops some of the concepts met in A Level Maths and brings it to a higher plane. It attracts students who thoroughly enjoy the subject and are keen to extend their understanding and knowledge. It gives you the chance to see a wide variety of fascinating topics, including some more demanding and abstract areas of Maths. Lessons are fast-paced, interesting and should really make you think! The Further Maths teachers at Newman are passionate about their subject and want to share their enthusiasm with you. During your first year of the Further Maths course, you will study one module of Decision Maths. This is essentially the Maths of how to make a decision! We look at various ways of using Maths to choose the right course of action. We also study one module of Mechanics, which links closely with Physics and can be helpful to those looking to pursue a career in engineering, amongst other things. The other module covered is an extension of the pure Maths covered on the A Level Maths course. This module will introduce you to topics such as mathematical proof, matrices and complex numbers. During the second year, you will study more Pure Maths, Mechanics and Statistics.
