What is Economics? Economics is a very difficult term to define. At a fundamental level though it is the study of how decisions are made about who gets what in society and in the world—really how the world’s resources are divided up between all the competing demands for these resources. It should answer questions as to why some people and countries have so much and some have so little. Why study it? It is simply the most interesting subject you can learn. It helps you make sense of the world and really why it is the way it is. Does there have to be such inequality? Why is there still poverty? Why do prices keep on rising? What would the world be like without governments? Why do we have recessions and booms and why can’t everyone get a job?

What you need to get on

You will need to achieve five or more “4” grades, including Grade 5 in Maths or will be studying Core Maths

How you are assessed

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.

What this level means

The A-level-equivalent step, and what universities and employers ask for.
