Throughout Year 1, students work on building a variety of knowledge and skills to work towards creating a final prototype and to undertake a final external examination. Students complete two units in Year one, which equates to their AS qualification. The first being the practical unit, in which students have to create a portfolio of design ideas, extensive research and develop these into a final high quality prototype. When given their design brief, students are given complete autonomy on what they wish to design and make to develop innovative and creative products, along with the manufacturing processes they wished to carry out. They were encouraged to used CAD and CAM facilities and to use all of the facilities we have here at NUAST in order to give them the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and creativity to achieve their full potential. Whilst completing their prototype, students have also been extensively taught the theory and application of processes, materials and components. This enabled students to integrate this knowledge with their decisions in the portfolio of evidence and also prepared them for their examination. During their A2 Year, students undertake another two units of work, following the same pattern of study and examinations. However, their design and make skills are stretched and encouraged to ensure they achieve their full creative and innovative potential.
