What the college says
A Level Art involves developing artistic skills and studying the work of other artists. It is mostly practical, although students will undertake their own personal research. Students have opportunity to develop personal responses to ideas, observations, experiences, environments and cultures in practical, critical and contextual forms. Topics of study: Skills based induction unit, followed by two units - a coursework unit and an externally set task. Students will be introduced to a variety of experiences employing a range of media, processes and techniques appropriate to the chosen area of Art, Craft and Design. The A-level course offers progression from the GCSE Art and Design course with similar structure and assessment criteria to assist in the transition. Assessment: Component 1: Personal Investigation (60%) Personal investigation based on an idea, issue, concept or theme. Component 2: Externally Set Assignment - 15 hours of supervised time (40%). Separate question papers will be set for each A2 endorsement, with a choice of eight inspiring starting points. Students produce a clearly defined selection of work, which will lead to a finished piece or pieces
What you need to get on
Grades 5 - 9 in English and Maths GCSE plus at least 3 other subjects. You will usually need to achieve at least a grade 6 in the subject you wish to study.
How you are assessed
Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
