Why Music - What Can I Do With It? The A Level music course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to experience the key disciplines of performance, composition, and analysis. This course is suitable for both students wanting to prepare for a higher education course in music, as well as students who wish to study music as an Additional area of interest. The AS course can be taken as a separate but complete course for students wishing to end their musical studies at this point. What Entry Requirements Do I Need? BTEC/GCSE music at Grade C or above, or equivalent potential. A general interest in music in terms of performing, composing, listening and analysing. The ability to play an instrument to Grade 5 or above, for the performing aspects of the course. What Will I Learn On This Course? The A Level course covers music history and theory through studying a selection of set works, and students will learn about performing and composition through a coursework portfolio. The prescribed works for next year include: Mozart: Clarinet Concerto in A, K. 622, 1st movement Sammy Davis Jr.: Greatest Hits Live - (i) Mr Bojangles, (ii) What kind of fool am I?, (iii) The Birth of the Blues Duke Ellington: Never No Lament: The Blanton-Webster Band - (i) Ko- ko, (Take 2), (ii) Concerto for Cootie, (iii) Harlem Airshaft Related background: Early jazz and swing J.S. Bach: Cantata No. 140, Wachet auf. Related background: Luther and Catholic Germany Mendelssohn: Hebrides overture Fing
