The successful study of Music requires a whole range of skills and students are encouraged to embrace different ways of thinking about music. Three key areas await the would-be A Level musician: performance (35%), composition (25%) and listening & appraising (40%). It is the student’s responsibility that they receive weekly lessons from a good instrumental or vocal teacher. Pupils will prepare for a 10 minute recital at the end of the course (35%). Students will compose two compositions, one free and the other in response to a brief. (25%). Students complete an in-depth study of set works from a range of genres, including The Operas of Mozart, Piano Music of Chopin, Brahms and Grieg, Stevie Wonder, Daft Punk, Beyonce, Hanz Zimmer and Bernard Hermann. Other components include aural awareness, melodic dictation, chord recognition and music analysis

What you need to get on

Pupils are expected to have achieved a grade 6 in GCSE Music and will have passed or be around Grade 5 in music theory. Performance is 30% of the course and pupils need to be equivalent to Grade 5 or higher on their principle study (instrument or voice).

How you are assessed

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
