AS & A2 Mathematics / Further Mathematics What Entry Requirements Do I Need? For AS and A2 Mathematics - GCSE Mathematics, minimum Grade B. For AS and A2 Further Mathematics - GCSE Mathematics, minimum Grade A. The AS course in mathematics is a one year course which comprises of 3 modules, all of which have an exam at the end of the year in June. The modules studied are Core 1, Core 2 and one applied module from Mechanics 1, Decision 1 or Statistics 1. The A2 course is a second year, following on from AS Maths, where the next 3 modules are Core 3, Core 4 and another applied module from Mechanics 1, Decision 1 or Statistics 1. Again these modules have an end of year exam for each module. The AS and A2 Further Mathematics is a more advanced course which is strongly recommended for students who wish to progress to a mathematics or STEM-based degree or those who have a flair for the subject. Further Mathematics is a complete standalone course which requires 3 modules for AS and 6 modules for A2, these are in addition to the A Level mathematics course. It is also possible to study AS further Mathematics over a two year period, students interested in further maths often choose this option, allowing more flexibility and study time. What Will I Learn On These A Level Courses? Topics studied throughout Core 1 to Core 4 will cover algebra, geometry and calculus. The applied modules are Mechanics 1 (M1), Decision 1 (D1) and Statistics 1 (S1). In M1, you will consider mathematical models
