What the college says

The first year is the AS level course and allows students to study Pure Mathematics and an applied module. Students who wish to achieve the A level then take the second year of the course which builds on the Pure element of the course in the first yea and introduces an applied module of their choice either in mechanics decision or further statistics module. Pure Mathematics is an extension of GCSE topics including further study of algebra geometry and trigonometry together with other topics such as calculus and vectors. In Statistics probability regression and correlation sampling and distributions are studied. Mechanics includes the study of forces equations of motion and centres of mass. Decision maths involves the study of how algorithms are used to solve real-life problems. The use of information technology is integral to the course. There is no coursework element to this course. All students will be issued with textbooks. Students are regularly assessed using examination standard questions and past examination papers. Students require a scientific calculator. You will be able to purchase one from the department at the start of the course at a very reasonable price. Hours of lessons per week: 4.3 Indicative group size: 20

What you need to get on

You will need at least grade B in GCSE Mathematics and five other full GCSEs at grades A* to C including English Language. Equivalent mathematics qualifications will be considered from mature and overseas students. Students will also be expected to complete an algebra sheet over the summer holiday in order for them to feel comfortable with the work at the start of the course. Students with a B grade in GCSE Mathematics will attend an extra support lesson during the first year.
