The Light Vehicle Apprenticeship is aimed at vehicles under 3.5 tonnes and covers many skills including removing and replacing of faulty parts to complex diagnosis of vehicle faults using the latest technology, tools and equipment. An Apprenticeship is a vocational, work-based programme that demonstrates competence and knowledge. With a combination of on-the-job training and assessments, and training through an approved body, Apprenticeships demonstrate the individual's competence to do a job to a national standard. In addition to the core Apprenticeship requirements, there are separate requirements which include, Maths, English, ICT, Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) and Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS). The main emphasis of the programme will be about developing the learners diagnostic skills in relation to vehicle system fault finding on the following systems. Engine, transmissions, steering, brakes, suspension, electrics / electronics. This qualification is based on cars and light vans. It requires many skills that include fault finding, use of technical data and replacing faulty units.

Apprentices without Level 2 English and Maths will need to achieve this level and take the test for level 2 prior to taking their apprenticeship end-point assessment
