Aims of the course To give students the opportunity to: engage with the relationships between human populations over space and time and their physical environment at a variety of scales from local to global, and consider their own role relative to the issues being studied, and the values and attitudes of others including decision makers. What is the outline of the course? Over two years students will study the following: Physical Geography: Water and carbon cycles – The major stores of water and carbon at or near, the Earth’s surface, and the dynamic cyclical relationships with them. Coastal systems and landscapes - Coastal processes, landforms, sea level changes, coastal flooding and protection. Students will participate in a residential trip to Borth. Hazards – The hazards that the lithosphere and atmosphere pose to human populations. Human Geography: Global systems and governance – globalisation; the economic, political and social changes associated with technological and other driving forces, and how they have been a key feature of the global economy and society. Changing places – People’s engagement with places, their experience of them and the qualities they ascribe to them. Population and the environment – How population growth and change impact the environment and vice versa. What key skills will I learn? A variety of basic investigative, cartographic, graphical, applied ICT and statistical skills. Completion of a geographical fieldwork investigation each year. Career

What you need to get on

Grade 4 GCSE in Mathematics and English Language. A minimum of five GCSEs at grades 5 (C) and above including grade 6 (B) in the subjects selected for A Level. To study Further Maths a grade 7 in Mathematics GCSE is required. A grade 5 in English is essential for accessing Business Studies, Economics, Government & Politics, Media, Philosophy & Ethics, Psychology and Sociology if you have not studied these subjects at GCSE. A grade 5 in Mathematics is essential for accessing Physics/Biology/Chemistry and also Business Studies, Computing, Economics and Product Design- if you have not studied these subjects at GCSE.
