Students must attend St Mary's School & 6th Form College on a full time basis to access this course. The aims and objectives of the Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9–1) in English Language are to enable students to: ● read a wide range of texts fluently and with good understanding. ● read critically and use knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve their own writing. ● write effectively and coherently using Standard English appropriately. ● use grammar correctly, punctuate and spell accurately. ● acquire and apply a wide vocabulary alongside knowledge and understanding of grammatical terminology, and linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language. ● listen to and understand spoken language, and use spoken Standard English effectively. Spoken language will be reported as a separate grade on the student’s certificate.

What you need to get on

There are no prior learning or other requirements for this qualification. However, some students may be advised to take a Functional Skills qualification in preparation for study at GCSE level.

How you are assessed

Entry level and Level 1 study, English and maths retakes, and supported programmes.

What this level means

The GCSE-equivalent step, and the usual route into Level 3.
