Geology is a practical, multidisciplinary science. Geologists are scientific detectives who try to reveal the past and predict the future of the Earth, studying rocks, earthquakes, volcanoes and the landforms of the planet. Fossils are studied to help understand the evolution of life. Geologists also play a leading role in managing natural materials such as water supplies, energy resources and mineral deposits.

What you need to get on

Grade 4 or above in GCSE English Language and a Grade 5 or higher GCSE Maths. Two C grades or higher in GCSE Sciences (Core, Additional or Biology, Chemistry or Physics). An average GCSE score of 5.20 or higher. Grade C or higher in GCSE Geography is desirable.

How you are assessed

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
