Music A Level is both practical and academic. It is both hard work and time consuming, but enjoyable and involves working closely with others. What do you study? You will develop performance skills (solo and/or ensemble), compose music and learn about harmony. You will build up your aural and analytical skills by studying selections from the New Anthology of Music (Edited by J. Winterson, Peters, 2000) and wider listening. You will also be involved with a variety of extra-curricular music. The aim of this course is to enrich and stimulate students’ musical ability and will develop students’ musical skills in each area to prepare them for further education. However, it is also valuable for those students who wish to conclude their musical studies at this point. The course offers room for choice of musical preference as well as ensuring fair and equal assessment in all areas of the course. What experience should you have? • You must be able to read music • Ideally, you should have, or be studying for Grade V Theory • You should be at least Grade V standard on your main instrument • You must be able to work with other people and be prepared to contribute time and effort to music making in School • You will be expected to join the Senior Choir and perform in an instrumental ensemble/orchestra • You should take responsibility for encouraging others in music making.

What you need to get on

The minimum entry requirement is 4 GCSEs at Grade 7 or above and 2 GCSEs at Grade 6 including English Language and Mathematics at a minimum of Grade 6. Students will be required to achieve at least a Grade 7 in each GCSE subject they wish to study at A Level. Students wishing to take A Level Music will also require Associated Board Grade 5 Music Theory and Associated Board Grade 5 Music Practical in addition to the GCSE grade requirements outlined above
