GCE A Level in Politics
at Highbury Fields School, London · school or sixth form
What the college says
Politics is an integral part of daily life, and studying it offers a glimpse into the complexity of how political decisions are taken and how citizens can influence the world in which we live Politics is a ‘real life’ subject. Politics determines how we are educated, housed, cared for in hospital and kept secure from crime and violence. We analyse the ways that governments respond to the big issues of the day and how the system itself may aid or hinder their approach. This involves looking at the ways in which democracy, Parliament, and government work and, crucially, debate about how they may be improved. Should 16 year olds be given the vote? What about prisoners? Are referendums bad for democracy? Or are they an integral part of the political process? Through the study of UK and US politics and comparing institutions of government in both countries as well as ideas and concepts that underpin these ways of ‘doing Politics’ students will get a firm grasp of the foundations of our political systems. This course helps students become enquiring and to better understand government, how decisions are made and what influences those decisions.
