This fascinating A Level course focuses primarily on challenges to the authority of the state in the late 18th and 19th century. This was period of great upheaval with revolution challenging the traditional established elites. It was a period where strong leaders emerged, inspiring the masses and causing radical changes across Europe. Unit 1 - Protest and Reform c1785 to c1870: how the changing nature of Britain caused the people to protest for reforms and demand greater democratic representation and living conditions. Unit 2 - Italian unification: how through conflict, revolution and political change the traditional elites of separate Italian states succumbed to liberalism and nationalism so that by 1870 a unified nation of Italy emerged in southern Europe. Unit 3 - The Witch Craze: how the witch craze of the 17th century in Britain, Northern Europe and America to uncover the causes and consequences of this astonishing period. Burnings, torture, hangings and total panic – what was at the heart of an unparalleled phenomenon that led to the execution of over 100,000 innocent people? Unit 4 - Independent coursework: students will be required to identify an issue they wish to study and develop a question from this, which will be the focus of a historical investigation.
