What the college says
The History A level course covers a range of countries (USA, India and Britain) and time periods (the Tudor age, including Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, and the modern world), so it presents a wide range of opportunities for students to further develop their historical skills, broaden their knowledge and to pursue areas of their own interest. The course focuses upon key themes such as equality, freedom, protest and rebellion across a range of societies. It is based upon key concepts and events in political, economic, social and cultural history. Links with current events in today’s world are explored –‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it’ (George Santayana). Discussion and debate are at the heart of the subject. History A Level encourages students to carry out research, to write effectively and to present reasoned arguments.
What you need to get on
The entry requirement is at least a grade 5in English at GCSE and additionally students who have taken History at GCSE would be usually be expected to have gained at least a grade 5. However, individual cases will be considered and performance in other Humanities subjects will also be taken into account. There is no requirementto have studied History at GCSE.
