History is a very rewarding subject to study because it tries to interpret and explain the events, issues and major personalities that have helped to shape the world we live in. The options in the first year are linked by the themes of nationalism and dictatorship and their links with democracy. In studying Germany (Paper 1) and Italy (Paper 2), a similar pattern of political change occurred that saw unstable democracies replaced by nationalist dictatorships, with significant impacts on the wider history of Europe, before returning to democratic forms of government.
