GCE A Level in Film Studies
at George Salter Academy, West Bromwich · school or sixth form
What the college says
Film Studies is an academic discipline; a subject that not only studies the creative and artistic form of film but also considers film through a theoretical and critical lens. The A Level course looks at the historical development of the film industry, allowing students to engage with films from early silent cinema to 1930s Hollywood films to contemporary and experimental cinema. Through the study of this medium, students will analyse a total of eleven films, producing analytical and evaluative essays on elements of spectatorship, representation, ideology, aesthetics and film theory. Students will also have the opportunity to apply their learning creatively to produce an original short film screenplay.
