What the college says

This course is suitable for inquisitive, creative students who are passionate about cinema and eager to explore film as a dynamic visual language. It serves as a strong foundation for higher education or careers in filmmaking, screenwriting, media production, journalism, and digital marketing. Students will develop advanced skills in critical analysis, visual communication, and independent research. They will explore a diverse range of global cinema, studying how elements like cinematography, editing, and cultural contexts shape meaning. Ultimately, they will apply these theoretical insights practically by creating their own short films or screenplays.

What you need to get on

For all Sixth Form courses, students must have five GCSE (or equivalent) passes at Grades 9-4, which must include Mathematics and English Language/Literature at a Grade 4 or above. Film Studies is very similar to English as a subject, focusing on your ability to analyse and discuss the meaning created by filmic texts. It is also a highly creative subject so having a passion for film and audio visual media will be an asset.

How you are assessed

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
