GCE A Level in English Language
at Sale Grammar School, Sale · school or sixth form
What the college says
Students will study how language is a living, dynamic system of communication. Linguistic diversity in speech is central to this A Level, including that of individuals, social groups, institutions, and changes over time. This subject equips students with both creative and close analytical skills which are vital for other subjects and many potential careers. It involves the critical study of spoken, electronic and written texts, including, stories published for young children, the language of people in positions of power, and the analysis of media texts. English Language A Level offers a more scientific approach to linguistic data analysis than is usually associated with the study of English. There are numerous overlaps in English Language with subjects such as Psychology, Sociology, History, Politics, Biology and Law. The subject has a direct correlation to any career with children, Audiology, Advertising, Marketing, Law and Journalism. The breadth offered fosters a lifelong interest in the English Language and makes students active and critical observers of the everyday language around them.
