GCE A Level in Chemistry A
at Maidstone Grammar School, Maidstone · school or sixth form
What the college says
The course stresses practical applications in the lab and developing key ideas, with more experimental and individual work than GCSE. 6 modules are taught including the development of practical skills. It is assessed by 3 written papers, the last being synoptic in style. Chemistry will challenge the brightest students. Hard work will be rewarded by intellectual stimulation and satisfaction of going deep into the workings of the world. Some topics explain why materials behave the way they do and how to use thinking tools and substantial calculations to understand and predict changes. We examine the nuts and bolts of substances from a detailed look at atoms and electrons through to more complex structures. We learn ways of finding out what materials are. Some topics build upon GCSE going into greater depth; others are new such as entropy and instrumental analysis. Inorganic and Organic Chemistry are studied in more detail. M1 is the development of practical skills and integrated into the whole course. M2 includes acid theory and electrons in atoms. M3 covers patterns of behaviour in the Periodic Table and reaction rates and equilibrium. M4 introduces principles of Organic Chemistry and investigates families of compounds and instrumental analytical techniques. M5 covers physical principles of behaviour. Principles across the whole course interlink to develop an all-round understanding of why all materials behave as they do. Inorganic Chemistry examines the interesting and surpri
