What is the course about? You will gain a wide appreciation and understanding of the traditions of English Literature. You will develop your skills of analysis through the study of a wide range of poetry, prose and drama from different periods and explore form, structure and language, as well as the contexts and different interpretations of texts. What kind of students is this course suitable for? You need an inquiring mind and a genuine desire to learn through reading and analysing literature. An ability to analyse what you have read and to communicate your ideas effectively is important. You need to have an interest in a wide range of literature from different periods and a desire to gain understanding of how language is used to convey meaning. The A level course consists of the study of eight texts, including at least two poetry, two prose and two drama texts, one of which will be a Shakespeare play. You will have the opportunity to study texts from several periods of English Literature, including writers as diverse as F Scott Fitzgerald, Rossetti, Ibsen and Armitage. In addition, there is a non-examined unit, comprising two essays: a piece of close textual analysis and a comparative study of two texts.
