English Language
at Sacred Heart Catholic High School, Newcastle Upon Tyne · school or sixth form
What the college says
The English Language course allows students the opportunity to develop their subject expertise by engaging creatively and critically with a wide range of texts and discourses. Students will create texts and reflect critically on their own processes of production, while analysing the texts produced by others. The English Language will be explored as both a medium of communication and as a topic in its own right, with an emphasis on language as a creative tool for expression and social connection, as well as for individual cognition. Across 2 years, students will be given the opportunity to consider large scale public discourses about change and variety, drawing on regional, ethnic, national and global English use. They will investigate ways in which language is acquired by children and how it is constantly developing to meet the cultural, technological and political demands of society.
