English Language A Level
at The North Halifax Grammar School, Halifax · school or sixth form
What the college says
Do women speak differently to men? Do men speak more than women? How are new technologies affecting the way we write and speak? How can language be used to exert power? How can language be used to persuade? How did you first learn to speak? Where did the language you speak come from? Where is the language you speak going? How did you learn to read? What exactly is “reading”? Does it matter if you don’t “speak proper”? These and many other questions are raised and discussed on this course. We study language from all walks of life and from all times. From a Mars Bar wrapper to a sixteenth century recipe, and from your last text message to subway graffiti, we study them all. We achieve good results and English Language has a number of useful applications for a range of careers. You will discover more about your own language and learn to use it more effectively.
