What the college says

The aim of this course is to offer students opportunities to develop their linguistic expertise by exploring key language concepts and engaging with a range of texts and discourses. The course explores the study of English language both as a medium of communication and as a topic in its own right, with an emphasis on the ability of students to pursue lines of enquiry, analyse texts produced by others and debate different views. Students are taught to use an academic register to engage with text, employing a wide range of linguistic descriptors to explore and evaluate the creation of meaning in texts. Students study the key concepts of audience, purpose, genre and mode and explore language in its wider social and geographical contexts. Finally, this course introduces students to the study of children’s language development, applying methods of linguistic analysis to explore the developmental stages and engaging with theoretical debates about how children acquire language. This is a thorough and interesting course that ensures that learners engage with a wide range of different texts and genres, developing understanding of how language works in real life contexts and as a tool for communication.
