English Combined Language and Literature A Level
at Southend High School For Boys, Westcliff-On-Sea · school or sixth form
What the college says
This course will combine Language and Literature elements, and it is likely that it will include the opportunity for students to produce their own writing and critically reflect on the processes of that writing. Students are likely to study both literary and non-literary texts, including, for example, texts that are not formally published and marketed such as spoken language, personal letters and multimedia texts. Literary texts will probably be drawn from the three main genres of prose fiction, poetry and drama. The course will allow for a great deal of variety in the study of English, but the Language element will be pervasive. For example, the approach to the literary texts will probably include an awareness of linguistic qualities and issues. Students will also learn about different methods of language analysis in their approaches.
