In A level Drama and Theatre, the emphasis is very much on understanding what goes into making an effective piece of theatre. The course is driven by practical exploration of texts and practitioners, leading to the ability to write confidently about what is required in the staging of texts. Lessons will often take the form of workshops where different texts and practitioners will be explored. The academic focus is on understanding the context of a variety of texts and how this can be effectively communicated to an audience. There is an historical aspect to the course and the history of theatre and performance will be explored, as well as its social and cultural importance.This syllabus contains four assessed pieces of practical work, covering scripted performances, devised performances and ?reimagined text? - devising a piece from an extract of text. This gives a true creative and practical focus to the course, balanced with a strong academic foundation which is highly regarded by universities as excellent preparation for degrees in arts and humanities, among other disciplines.A requirement of the course is seeing live theatre and frequent trips will be planned to a range of productions. The course seeks to broaden students' social, political, cultural and historical understanding, alongside their artistic development.
