We are a leading nation in high end design, next year there will be nearly 1300 design courses and nearly 2500 engineering courses offered at university in the UK. Product design gives students the specific skills they require to go on to study these subjects and the analytical skills they require in a wide range of subjects and in everyday life. It requires the students to learn core technical principles relating to mechanics and materials and then combine these with core designing and making principles to apply this knowledge. Furthermore students will learn applied specialist knowledge in the area of woods, metals and plastics. The subject calls for students to become independent and creative problem solvers with an emphasis on the details and high standards. They must look for needs, wants and opportunities and respond to them by developing a range of ideas and making products and systems. Students combine practical skills with an understanding, and in this process they study and evaluate past and present design and technology, its uses and effects. Design and Technology aims to develop analytical and creative thinkers ready for the ever changing world, who are capable of making educated and critical decisions relating to their environment. However the most unique aspect of Design & Technology is the application of skills and knowledge in practical tasks which is vital to gain the understanding necessary to move into an engineering or design based career.

What you need to get on

If you have studied DT or Engineering at GCSE you are required to have at least a Level 6. If you have not studied these subjects at GCSE you are required to have an average GCSE score of 6.5

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
