What the college says
The new AQA specification for Product Design offers a linear two year A Level qualification. Meaning students sit all of their exams at the end of the course. No longer do the AS units contribute towards the final A Level outcome. In Year 12 students develop and improve both their theoretical knowledge and design and making skills. This is completed through formal theory lessons which cover topics in preparation for the final A Level exams. During this time students will also complete tasks to improve creativity in designs and refine practical workshop skills. This prepares students to undertake their FMP in Year 13. During the course students will continue their theoretical knowledge in preparation for the two A Level exams that take place at the end of the year. Paper 1 contributes towards 25% of the final grade. Paper 1 is a mixture of short answer, multiple choice and extended response questions. Paper 2 contributes 25% towards the final grade, the paper focuses on product analysis and commercial manufacture. A final major project is completed during Year 13 which makes up the other 50% of the overall A Level grade. Students are given the freedom, with the support of staff, to produce their own brief for their FMP. This is done by allowing them to follow a design principle of their choice such as architecture, product, textiles etc.
