While ICT could be considered to be like learning to drive a car, Computer Science is more like learning how the car works, how to keep it running and potentially how to build a better one. Some of the concepts covered have some overlap with some of the decision maths covered as part of Further Mathematics A Level. The course From the beginning, lessons will be split into practical sessions where you will be supported in developing your coursework project and theory sessions where you will learn about topics that will be covered in the examinations. You will be expected to have an interest in the subject and to keep up to date with current technological developments. Some experience of coding (any language) would be sensible. Previous study of Computer Science (rather than ICT) at GCSE level is also advisable. Careers and Higher Education Computer science is a technical subject that is closely related to maths and engineering and is undoubtedly a strong qualification for those intending to study the subject at higher level in the future, or as part of any other technical subject. For those not intending to progress in this direction, a qualification in computer science clearly shows that you have strong technical skills and a logical approach to problem solving. Undertaking the project provides evidence that you have the time management and technical skills to thrive in academic and professional life. What you need to get on

Our minimum entry requirements for September 2026 are six GCSEs at grade 6 or above, including English Language and Mathematics. Applicants must achieve Grade 7 or above in each of the subjects (or related subjects) that they wish to study at A Level.
